@cspanofficial: Attorney General Pam Bondi declined Tuesday to say whether she was consulted by the White House before it deployed National Guard troops to American cities. "I am not going to discuss any internal conversations with the White House with you," she told Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, during an oversight hearing on Capitol Hill. She then accused the senator of voting to shut down the government while law enforcement officers, going without pay, were trying to protect cities like Chicago. "I wish you loved Chicago as much as you hate President Trump," she sniped. "If you're not going to protect your citizens, President Trump will." Sen. Durbin appeared exasperated by her sharp response to a "simple question" about the legal justification for the deployments. "I've been on this committee for more than 20 years. That's the kind of testimony you expect from this administration," he said. "A simple question as to whether or not they had a legal rationale for deploying National Guard troops becomes grounds for personal attack. I think it's a legitimate question.
