Attila Ambrus (born October 6, 1967, Csíkszereda, Romania) is a former Hungarian criminal, widely known by the nickname “Whiskey Robber” 🥃🔫. During the 1990s, he became notorious for a series of bank, post office, and currency exchange robberies across Hungary. Ambrus fled Romania in 1988 by hiding beneath a train 🚂 and illegally crossing into Hungary. In Budapest, he worked a variety of jobs, including gravedigger ⚰️, zookeeper 🦁, and hockey goalkeeper 🏒 for Újpesti TE. Despite his efforts, financial difficulties pushed him toward crime. Between 1993 and 1999, he carried out more than 20 armed robberies. No fatalities occurred during his heists, and he became recognizable for drinking a glass of whiskey before each robbery 🥃 and for treating victims with politeness. The media and public dubbed him a “gentleman robber,” with some even likening him to a modern-day Robin Hood 🏹. He was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to 17 years in prison 🚔.
