@cspanofficial: President Trump heaped praise on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during an Oval Office meeting Tuesday, declaring the two leaders "have great love for each other." "We've come a long way over the last few months, actually, in terms of that relationship," the president said, calling the prime minister "a world-class leader" and a tough negotiator. The Canadian PM came to Washington with the goal of striking a deal to lower the steep tariffs President Trump slapped on his country's second-largest trading partner, including 50% levies on steel and aluminum. "I think they're going to walk away very happy," President Trump said, but noted the two countries have "natural conflict" when it comes to their economies. Mr. Carney came to power in March on a platform of combating President Trump's tariffs and his threats to annex Canada and make it the 51st state, something the president again joked about during the Oval Office sit-down. The relationship between the countries has improved over the past several months and Canada has largely pared back its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, but a comprehensive trade deal has remained elusive. The U.S.–Mexico–Canada (USMCA) trade agreement, inked during President Trump's first term, is up for review next year, providing an opportunity to restructure terms. "We could renegotiate it, and that would be good, or we can just do different deals," President Trump said.
