Being able to live independently is not actually a biological requirement of a living thing. I've taught biology at the HS and College level for 15 years. I also have twins that were born at 26 weeks gestation. They were very much alive, despite needing heat and oxygen and feeding tubes. Can a newborn survive without help? What about someone who is profoundly disabled? What about someone who's 90 and on oxygen? Someone on bypass and a ventilation for surgery?
