If you have city water with a prv or back flow preventer it’s absolutely necessary, only time you don’t need it is on a well.

closed system or not its a $ grab the tank has a warranty for a reason new tanks last about 8 years expansion tanks are not needed here in nyc they just started implementing in 2025.

It’s called an expansion tank its take the heating pressure off the tank, with new heaters if you don’t have one your tank will leak.

So my understanding, if you are on well you do not need (house has expansion tank already) required with city water because newer meters have internal check valve, so the thermal expansion has no where to push back to

I don’t get it the expansion tank is there to absorb excess pressure if needed but there is a relief valve on the tank if too much pressure occurs
