I would have left the mess when I got back. He is acting like an overgrown child because you are standing up for yourself and protecting you and your kids peace from him and his mothers toxic behaviours. Hold your head high, you are doing all the right things. Do not allow either of them to beat you down, you dont owe either of them anything, they have taken enough from you as it is. Stay strong mumma, you and your babies will thrive without them. Your ex and his mother will find out what life without you looks like and regret it hard but only when its too late to fix

I wouldn’t even do that man’s laundry or do his dirty dishes. I would leave all that for him. I wouldn’t cook for him either. I would also tell him since your goi g through a divorce his MIL needs to stay away you do t need her toxicity around the children and telling them their mommmy is to busy to love them.
