they absolutely should not have dropped the phases. They should've doubled down and went into saga. Saga one, phases 1, 2 and 3. Saga two phases 1, 2 and 3. The problem wasn't the phases. The problem was that they didn't have a new saga after the previous saga finished. And no, an abstract notion of the vocabulary term "Multiverse" is not a saga. Just a character "existing" is not a saga. A saga is where every single movie in someway or another loosely ties back into an overarching narrative. The problem with all the phases after phase 3 is that these movies were self contained. No through line to be had so no one cared about them. if we are not GIVEN a reason to care then we are not GOING to care. We cared about avengers because the Iron Man movie set it up. We cared about Thanos because the avengers movie set up. We cared about the guardians because it directly tied back into Thanos. We cared about Ant-man because he in the comics was a founding member to the avengers, and they paid off that care by making him vital to the time travel sub plot. Every single movie either set up something we cared about or was branching off something they already got us to care about. That stopped with phase 4 onward. No connection? No interest.

I’m pretty sure the phase thing started out as a fan based thing that Marvel adopted. I could be wrong though.
