Hardly Canadian. 70% of Canada’s oil sands production is foreign owned, with Americans owning 52%. Out of the 48 corporations on the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers board, more than 30 were majority foreign-owned. We love the narrative that we’re not the 51st state, but American financial institutions and billionaires own much of our energy infrastructure. Rather than defend “Canadian” oil and gas, it might be time for Canada to further invest in renewables like solar and wind, in order to build our own energy sovereignty.
