Easy way to test an automobile relay is swap it with one of the others in the fuse box

I wish they made one for a nine pin so I can test my flasher relay

Number one if that is a solid state relay, you would not hear clicking. And in a relay, the clicking sound is a contact, closing or opening. And before you come at me for not knowing what I’m talking about, I was a construction electronic technician for 40+ years

Ok so for you guys just breaking out don’t trust these little break out boxes they do not load test the relay build your own use a headlamp for the load save your self some headache

Theo :
The best way is to use a multi meter to see if there is continuity between the 85 and 86 terminals and then the 30 to the 87 terminals

will it do early 80s relays?

9v is a fine way to test a relay.

click it over then measure for resistance over the contacts. it’s really not that hard.

Jason :
can you not use the 9v on power inlet side then check power out side with multi meter?

levismith285 :
does it load the circuit though, if it just check for continuity then the relay could still fail under load.

been using a 9 volt battery for years. its a tried and true method of testing a relay.

it wont test it under a load

Or you know how a relay operates and you test it with a meter

Kyle Robinson :
because this doesn't test the load it doesn't prove anything. cuz the relay can look good make good contact in there but if you put a real load on it it shits the bed

I’ve seen more with stuck contacts . Also voltage and being able to support amperage are two separate things.

youd think theve never been tested with a test light

yeah that's doing the same thing as the 9 volt it can't test load

Won’t tell you if the relay can hold a load. LED lights don’t draw enough amps to make a bad one fail the tester.

That clicking is two things, not just telling you the coil is good. Coils themselves do not click. The clicking is the contacts closing. The coil has to be good for the contacts to close, therefore the clicking sound. The contacts can be burned and not making good contact.

I'll get it when it can test the 3 pin relays for a mercedes

or maybe use a different relay in the relay / fuse box
