September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, also known in the U.S. as the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools. Recognized in Canada as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it is a federal holiday acknowledging the country’s role in the residential school system and committing to truth-telling and healing. It is a time to honor survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never made it home. In the United States, however, there is no federally recognized day to honor the children taken to “Indian Boarding Schools”, though the history is deeply parallel. From the late 1800s through much of the 20th century, federal assimilation policies removed Native American children from their homes, erasing their Indigenous identities and causing harm that is still felt today. Children were forcibly taken from their families, stripped of their language, hair, clothing, and culture. Many endured physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. By 1926, the majority of Native school-age children were attending these institutions. Thousands never came home. The stated purpose of this policy was to “Kill the Indian, Save the Man” in a bid to resolve its “Indian problem”. Its impact continues to reverberate through Native communities to this day. 🧡 On Orange Shirt Day, we remember that Every Child Matters—and we call on the U.S. and Canadian governments to honor this truth, acknowledge its history, and commit to healing and justice.
