I’m going to preference this I don’t agree with Trump on this… but I don’t agree with snippets of quotes to push a broader agenda either… Trumps whole quote, "We took the freedom of speech away, because that's been through the courts, and the courts said you have freedom of speech but what has happened is when they burn the flag it agitates and irritates crowds. I've never seen anything like it, on both sides, and you end up with riots." So this was specifically directed at the action of burning the flag, which is something that even prominent democrat politicians have commented they wanted to make happen over the years as well, such as Hillary Clinton and even Biden. Now, this will get challenged in the courts and go through the entire legal process again to either be re-enforced as free speech, or overturned (as many other longstanding laws are) as a form of protected speech.
