@nbcnewyork: Three people are accused of stealing a Harlem brownstone, taking it in an alleged deed theft scheme that targeted the family of a woman who died in 2018. Okryun Marrero owned the brownstone at 267 West 131st Street at the time of her death in 2018. She left the million-dollar residence to her husband, children and grandchild. But according to Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, the family was swindled out of ownership of the property in a deed theft scheme that started in 2024. #Harlem #realestate #crime #nbc4ny #nyc
Back in the day, these brownstone used to cost $12. Only Black people owned them. Using it as collateral is crazy. These brownstones every single one of them are beautiful and huge inside. I hope the real family definitely gets it back

How is this even possible in 2025… all these deeds should be digitized and secured. No randoms should be able to actually access the deed

Thinking about paying off your mortgage? Keep in mind: a paid-off, lien-free home can actually make you a target for deed fraud. Leaving a small balance, just enough to show a recorded lien, makes your property much harder for fraudsters to steal. Even $1–$2k is enough to keep the lien visible, without costing much in interest, and it keeps your home safer. Unfortunately, the system is designed to protect billion-dollar banks more than individual homeowners, so having even a small mortgage adds hurdles that make defrauding your property much less likely.

What happened between 2018 and 2024 tho? The family didn’t live in the building and was so far removed the scammers had time to do renos? Somethings off or they have multiple other properties in the city 🙄
