@dralexgeorge: Replying to @assssshh OCD is so misunderstood and it means people suffer needlessly for far too long. #ocdawaraness is really important. Please keep sharing your thoughts in the comments you are saving lives x #MentalHealth
As someone who really suffers with OCD it makes a pleasant change to hear someone talk about it in more then just a trivial way

It’s currently ruling my life. I feel like diagnosis can’t really help while the wait for therapy is, in some cases, years. Absolutely debilitating

❤ Trying to increase certainty decreases tolerance of uncertainty which increases worry. Contrarily, increasing your tolerance of uncertainty helps decrease worry.

I think OCD is one of the most serious of mental health challenges & at the same time, the most mis-understood. The word is tossed around like a small behavioural issue, it’s actually huge. A young person in our family is displaying traits & it’s causing great distress, thankfully it’s being taken seriously. Boys usually present early in puberty, he’s much earlier. Thank you for talking about this ❤️🩹

I always thought my OCD was pathetic like I was never really unwell and that's just because no one could see just how poorly I really was, its ruined my life in so many ways and I struggle every single day even though I understand everything about it. I find it so much harder to explain to people how unwell I am because they just dont understand and they say things like oh just dont worry, or dont do it then, or dont be silly that wont happen..if only it was that easy

It literally wrecks your life, you’re constantly searching for certainty, and you stop living your life. Love listening to you though which brings some comfort

Leaving into uncertainty has been the biggest, HARDEST but most freeing part of my OCD therapy journey. It’s helped my general anxiety too tbh and think the method should be used more rather than constantly having to have evidence that things will be ok. What if we accepted theres a chance they might not be, but that’s ok, and that we can persist anyway

Thank you Dr Alex for speaking up about this. I sent your previous post to my daughter who suffers with OCD and she said this… omg it’s like he’s reading my mind !! This is exactly what it’s like and I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone else spell it out exactly like this before.

I haven’t investigated a diagnosis but I’m fairly sure I have pure O OCD. I’ve listened to a fair bit online & just hearing other peoples experiences has been such a cathartic thing for me and made me feel less alone 🥺

Teresa Brooks :
It’s the way the mind is saving you actually. Keeping you on alert and it’s a strategy if you like. Don’t try to treat that symptom. Thinking about that invites compassion which is very powerful to start to release the grip. Getting behind the symptom and finding the root trauma is the key
