Pokémon soulsilver and heart gold had a whole other region of content and you got to fight red. The quality and value for money was better back then. Nowadays the game would've been spit in half and the other half would be paid DLC.

The fact we have fan-made games with difficulty options and or nuzlockes tells me it's nothing more than a lack of trying on either game freaks or Nintendo's part. and it's not like we need death or anything like that for the age up stuff, just more of a challenge and animation. animation speaking pokémon origins was in my opinion a perfect balance between it being more growing up with the audience. but also if you watched it as a kid it's still just as good. I wish stuff like pokémon origins continued because I had actually be watching that

I love when a series grows up with its fanbase. Shows like Adventure time, Gumball, and Dragon Ball all grew up in both maturity and talking points with their fan base. It feels great.

The main reason imo cause Nintendo as whole gravitates towards more Kid Friendly series. That’s why Zelda is still lacking in the story department. Like yeah they have Metroid, FE, Xenoblade but they sadly don’t reach 5 million units

It’s clear gamefreak can make high quality games look at beasts of reincarnation, at this point it’s either Nintendo treating them poorly or they just don’t like making pokemon anymore it’s almost been 3 decades

Scarlet and violet was bad because it is genuinely unplayable on the platform it came out that’s the only game I would say is “bad”

my issue with the modern Pokémon games aren't that they're targeting a younger audience than me. its that they feel like they have the "kids will play anything because they haven't experienced better yet" energy that was prevalent between 2013-2020 kids movies and cartoons.

I honestly feel like Game Freak wants to tell these kinds of stories, but they're being held back by brand identity, possibly through Nintendo. We're seeing them make more "mature" games with Beast of Reincarnation, and even the story of Scarlet/Violet has a lot of depth, with things like Team Star being abandoned by the school system and Arven basically having Survivor's Guilt. It's true that I'd love to see more, though.

While I absolutely agree with wanting an adult Pokemon experience, priority of brand cohesion is incomprehensibly different when you are as big as Pokemon. TPCs vision statement is “Bringing the world together through Pokemon”. The business is run by marketing the brand as a universal product, not as multiple products for different target audiences. This is why most reveal trailers for Pokemon show children and adults playing the games in a similar framing. When there is a deviation, this deep into it, it will stand out. You would be surprised at the hit in sales and scrutiny Pokemon Legends Arceus took because it was more action oriented than any game in the past, thus being viewed as comparitively inaccessible. Also, Kamen Rider has always mantained a strong connection to darker themes ever since the first show in the 70’s was literally about taking down n*zis. Kamen Rider was able to expand to adult content because it’s thematics have been steeped in serious issues from the beginning. Thus, making an “adult” show does not alter the global perception of the brand. Pokemon is different in this regard. Despite this, that doesn’t mean I am defending the games recent quality. The concern isn’t demographic shifting though, it is capitalistic greed.

personally its why i like the spin off pokemon games so much, sure they have a ton of silliness too them, they’re Pokemon. but conquest? mystery dungeon? rangers? they have so much that appeals to a variety of audiences

Nope! As someone who still actively plays pokemon and is excited for ZA, the games have definitely dropped in quality, when the gameboy and DS games were out they were graphically on par with all other games of that era, now they are far behind every competitor

honestly I place this at the feet of Nintendo. Nintendo notoriously dictates how they think their games should be played by the customer. mods? absolutely off the table. competitive smash bros? we'd really rather you didn't (competitive smash exists in spite of Nintendo who has actively shut down independent tournaments). if Nintendo wants pokemon to be played by 8-13 year old boys, then by God it will be (despite how much adults will shell out for a pokemon game with difficulty settings and a built in nuzlocke mode)

I kinda like where Pokémon is not like Digimon where needs to split his fan bases up cause I could always come back to Pokémon and feel like my kids self again that’s how Pokémon every time I come back to. It makes me feel.

I think the games have matured via competitive play. But as someone who doesn't really have the time for that, I would like the mainline games to have a hard mode with smarter NPCs.

Dude. At this point I'd love if the rival just went back to picking the type advantage against your pick for the starter.
