When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the steel didn’t shatter — it cracked. The real weak points were the old-school wrought-iron rivets up front. Those popped under stress, while the steel rivets used farther back held firm. The cold made the steel a little more brittle, but it was the rivets that let the seams open and the water rush in.
