I love how much the light changed in the 6-7 minutes it took to record this.

Marx wrote about how capitalism alienates all the way back in the 19th century, it is just more pronounced now

My social anxiety skyrocketed in 2020 and I’ve avoided public spaces and those tertiary relationships since then. I may have to reevaluate that in my life.

If I didn’t make small talk with the barista I saw consistently over like a year, I wouldn’t have found out we’re both entering masters programs in English with the intent to be teachers, and I would’ve missed out on a friend

I never use the self checkout, because the cashier's are lovely

That's so interesting! So what I'm hearing is maybe when I have a chance to choose to engage in those tertiary relationships, I should

not talking to people actually will make your anxiety worse too. I moved to Portugal with really bad anxiety and we talk a lot here. it has improved my vocabulary and my anxiety.

I miss my Burger King drive through lady ☹️we always chatted about nonsense on my lunch break…. And she would give me free nuggets “cause I’m just so sweet and make her day better”

As someone who provides a professional service to the public, some ppl come to the office just to talk or seem like they are conversation deprived. I feel like the loss of those interactions also result in a loss of empathy.

Also, the lack of those fleeting logistical/transactional conversations is part of WHY we feel increasingly anxious about going into public and talking to strangers. The more rare it becomes the less prepared for it we are. Especially those who have grown up in a silent world.

Lockdown made it aBUNdantly clear that I am actually extroverted and not just talkative

I love to talk to people. I live in the same town I grew up in so I always run into people I know, but I will talk to anyone who willingly gives me time. Music, video games, books and my vast collection of hobbies (I have adhd) makes it so I can meld into someone a lot of people can be comfortable talking to.

Interacting with people is “a lot for a lot of people” partially because everyone is out of practice!

As great as technology is, it’s really alienating us from one another. Back in 2017, I was living in London, and whenever my friends were out of town (which was frequently), I noticed that I would go days without talking to a single person because I would use the self-checkout at the supermarket, swipe my card on the bus without having to talk to a bus driver or conductor, send emails to my landlord when I had maintenance issue, etc. Now I’m back home in Nigeria which isn’t as technologically advanced and it’s way better because here you’re almost forced to talk to people 😅

I think we’ve lost way more to chat programs and texting than any self check out. It used to be, you had a question of anyone anywhere, you called them and asked them. Now we just shoot over a quick text & wait for the eventual reply. I used to talk on the phone for hours a day in the 90s, and I can’t tell you the last time I talked to ANYONE on my phone. It’s literally been months.

I'm a hairstylist and I'm actually kinda burned out by the depth of heavy conversations I've been having. I wonder, is this part of why my clients have started talking so much about heavier topics? I'm not actually qualified to be a therapist - I just act like one. 😓
