@phdwithpaige: Just like in part 1, this is about a quarter of the core reading for year 1, and it doesn’t include the Old English module which is usually in the 2nd or 3rd term of first year. These are all “core texts,” which means that professors think if you read nothing else, you should read these!! #englishliterature #englishlit #oxforduni #oxforduniversity #readinglist
Maybe it's just me, but I'm looking for a more world focused literature than a eurocentric one. Like I can enjoy the works dear and familiar but is it not better to understand literature across all walks of life? (Someone who is think about going back to school but gets icked by the literature programs that only focus on Britain and the USA)

I'm just going to paste this here: Hi! I'm in my final year of my BA in Languages and Lit in South Africa! In my English course, we also do African lit. I highly suggest Heart of Darkness, followed immediately by Things fall appart. Then some Bessie Head, Athol Fugard, and the book Moxyland. English is a worldwide language. Don't let the narrow narratives of the Western world keep you from exploring some of the best English books out there!

New Grub Street is a really underrated classic in my opinion. Some of the characters are excellent representations of different emotions or issues, like Edwin Reardon and depression

They still read Eagleton? Wow. I’m not saying it’s irrelevant, but it’s definitely historic at this point—not contemporary Theory.
