Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday said the White House was "having fun" with memes and "trolling" Democrats but insisted it was taking "no pleasure" from the "unenviable" task of determining what federal funding projects to target during the shutdown.   "Are they taking great pleasure in that? No. Is he trolling the Democrats? Yes. I mean, yes, because that's what President Trump does, and people are having fun with this. But, at the end of the day, the decisions are tough ones," he told reporters.   His comments follow President Trump making a series of social media posts mocking Democrats, including an AI-generated video depicting Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, as the grim reaper.   "Russ takes no pleasure in this. Russ wants to see a smaller, more efficient, more lean, effective federal government, as we do. He doesn't want people to lose jobs. He doesn't want to do that. But he has — that's his responsibility," the speaker said.   "The president takes no pleasure in this, but if you're giving — if Chuck Schumer is going to give Donald Trump the opportunity to determine what the priorities are, he's going to exercise that opportunity."   On Monday, the president posted an AI-generated video depicting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) with a fake mustache and sombrero.   "What they're trying to have fun with, trying to make light of, was to point out the absurdity that is the Democrats' position," Speaker Johnson said. "And they are using the memes and the tools of social media to do that.
