It's a bigoted industry where only a few are able to write female, POC and queer characters and do not fetishize misery nor use cheap shock value. We can see it in the current status quo where many believe that marriage and having kids is the end and drama ends making the characters boring.

When I first found out about Barbara Gordon’s implied assault AFTER she was left paralyzed I genuinely had to stop reading for a moment. Granted it’s not explicitly said in comics (as far as I know, there were a ton of critics because in movie they did make it more obvious) and I understand that the point was drive her dad crazy to show Joker’s point, but I was so sad to see it, it didn’t even serve Batman’s development further than it did with Robin or Alfred, and now she’s back to being Batgirl like it never happened in most storylines. They could’ve kept it a little longer as Oracle or maybe even give her some non-realistic arc like she gets super advanced prosthetics or something, but her trauma is not even acknowledged in the end, not even in the comic where it happens. :(
