My baby was born at 7lbs 9oz and he was SWIMMING in newborn. He was able to actually wear newborn clothes until he was 2.5 months old and I regret not buying preemie

my little boy was 7.8lbs and he fit in preemie for about 2 or 3 weeks so yes preemie is highly recommended!
