Fatal shooting in Limassol – Major traffic disruption following murder of football chairman (17/10/2025) #roadreportcy A major police operation is underway in Limassol following the daylight murder of businessman and football club chairman Stavros Demosthenous, who was shot dead shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Friday in what authorities describe as a premeditated killing. Demosthenous, aged 49, chairman of Karmiotissa FC and former president of Aris Limassol, was shot multiple times while seated in his vehicle near his home in the Sfalangiotissa area. His 18-year-old son, who was driving, attempted to reach Limassol General Hospital but crashed with another vehicle on the Limassol–Paphos motorway near the Tsirion area, where the car came to a stop. Police immediately sealed off both the Sfalangiotissa and Tsirion motorway areas, causing heavy traffic delays in both directions. Drivers are urged to avoid the affected routes and use alternative roads until further notice. Shortly after the incident, a white van believed to have been used by the assailants was found burned in Germasogeia, prompting further police activity and temporary closures in that area. ⸻ Official Police Statement In an official briefing, Police Spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou confirmed that the Cyprus Police are investigating a case of premeditated murder: “At around 9:30 a.m., the victim, Mr. Stavros Demosthenous, 49, was shot multiple times while sitting in the passenger seat of his vehicle. The vehicle was driven by his 18-year-old son when the attack occurred, approximately 500 meters from their home in Sfalangiotissa. Preliminary information suggests that the shots were fired from another moving vehicle, described as a white van, which fled the scene immediately afterward. The victim’s son continued driving toward the hospital but was involved in a collision near the Tsirion area, where the car stopped. A short time later, police were alerted to a vehicle on fire in Germasogeia, matching the description of the suspects’ van. Investigations confirmed that this vehicle had been reported stolen on September 4 in Nicosia. A post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow by State Pathologist Dr. Nikola Charalambous. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing to anyone with information to contact their local station or the Citizens’ Line.”
