@allseatedinabarn20: Lady Gray, a thrown away BLM rounded up wild Mustang, was one of the skinniest horses standing in that September auction ring. You could see every rib. Her eyes were dull. No one bid. She would’ve been loaded for slaughter the next morning. They had separated her from her yearling baby and luckily I noticed and bid on her baby as well. To keep them together. When we rescued Lady Gray, she wasn’t alone — her baby, Stella, was right beside her. Both were heartbreakingly thin and scared at the auction. They finally had safety. They finally had a chance. But just six days ago on Monday, while I was at the kill pen, I got the call no one ever wants to get. Stella was down. The vet was on the way. She didn’t make it before he arrived. The autopsy showed a ruptured intestine from a severe twist. It was fast. It was brutal. It’s one of the hardest parts of rescue — you can do everything right, and still lose them. My heart hurts for Stella, but also for Lady Gray… a mom who lost her baby after finally finding peace. She’s now bonded with Ashton and Christopher, two other foals in quarantine, and we’ll make sure she’s supported every step of the way.
