The Portfolio Committee visited various facilities to assess the maintenance and infrastructure of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Different stakeholders of the institutions presented and deliberated on governance matters, including funding, among others. Student Representative Council outgoing President Mr Siyabonga Mlondo made a recommendation to the Department of Higher Education and Training, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), and universities that they must review registration policies to ensure that no academically deserving student is excluded due to financial constraints. Delivering her remarks at the opening of the session, Deputy Director-General Ms Nolwazi Gasa retaliated that the department continues to work with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to enhance its administrative and payment systems to ensure that all eligible and qualifying students receive timely support. Delays or inefficiencies in the disbursement of funds undermine access, equity, and the very essence of the Freedom Charter’s timeless call that “the doors of learning and culture shall be opened to all.” DDG Gasa assured the sitting that the Department remains committed to working closely with National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the university sector to strengthen governance, promote fiscal discipline, and ensure that students—particularly the poor and working class—are not left behind. “Our collective mission must be to transform our higher education system into one that is not only globally competitive but also socially just, inclusive, and economically responsive.” #PPCoversightvisit #DHETPortfolioCommittee #Universities #DHET
