The historical record does support that Columbus was recalled to Spain under charges of mismanagement, lost some of his authority and prestige, and that his heirs later litigated with the Crown over rights and titles. But it is inaccurate to present that as a clean act of condemnation for ‘atrocities’ alone. As for the demographic collapse of the Taíno and other indigenous peoples, the devastation was largely driven by infectious diseases to which they had no immunity, but disease cannot explain the full extent of the collapse. Colonial violence, coercive labor systems, forced displacement, famine, and social disruption all contributed. The disaster is better understood as a multipronged tragedy than as a single-cause event.
