I'm an ASL interpreter and so many people in our field are worried about being replaced by ai but I've tried to explain the piece you explained about creative associations. Sometimes a client won't understand the true meaning behind a concept so I have to use compare/contrast or expansion to convey an English concept in sign language and AI can't do that yet. it can really just make associations between units of language (words and signs) and then combine them in associations that they've "seen" before. I'm not sure if that makes sense but you gave me the language to reassure my colleagues

In it's essence I think creativity is simply putting two things in a new way, I would say we have already seen that with AI. But even if AI can be creative it still doesn't take away from human creativity.

In my first few years of using AI (primarily programming and design ) I found that it doesn’t really innovate much if at all (yet). I think there is a large risk that human innovation will actually be stifled overall by AI moving forward. (why invent new things of AI gives you “the existing answer” ). It will be interesting to see if/when AI is able to genuinely innovate.

but then couldn't the meaning be given through the human intervention (the prompt)?

As a creative, I think that one of the most important aspects of human creativity (and the least likely for AI to ever potentially utilise) is the ability to recognise and harness the “lucky accident”.

I believe eventually AI will be able to create novels and even a great symphony.

We don’t have true generative AI today. We have complex pattern matching algorithms that try and anticipate our “intentions” based on large language models. But what’s crazy is, smaller models have proven to be superior to LLMs.

i love this. Do you think there's a potential for sentience and the creation of pathways about meaning in AI that's leveraging quantum computing? almost like the development of a super intelligence.

I use ChatGPT for programming. It can teach you or help you to create programs based on existing frameworks, but it cannot come up with new ideas or invent new frameworks. The introduction of LLMs into tech field can freeze or slowdown technical advancement. However, they can help increase productivity within the boundaries of current frameworks.

Her: how many ways of using a spoon can you think of
Me: you can pop someone's eye ball out, keep it intact and turn it around to give that person a perspective of themselves like they never had.
Her: You can use it to eat!
Me: That too. I'll... amm... go sit in the corner and think about where things went wrong. so. very. wrong! 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for creating this video. It’s fascinating. I spoke at a conference in Atlanta last week on this exact topic and without getting into all of the technical detail, I posed the thought that perhaps when AI hallucinates that’s the awakening of AI‘s ability to innovate and generate the initial sparkle creativity. At this juncture, human inspiration is still very necessary for AI creativity to get started. AI needs more time in the saddle toe collect more meaningful associates and as the hallucinations continue, it’s possible we could see AI eliminate the need for the initial human spark of inspiration- at that point, would we have reached the singularity of AI’s ascension to self awareness and consciousness? It’s a fun and fascinating consideration

It’s horrible, the more this kind of discussion goes in this direction, the more it begs the question how many HUMANS are human. Most of what’s talked about here could also be how one would describe “a dullard” or someone who’s ’not too bright’ or ‘doesn’t get the joke’ or ‘not a very sophisticated individual’ or ‘without good taste’ or ‘a bit simple’ or even just ‘not very broad minded’

I guess this explains why I sometimes get caught in chatgpt loops when seeking programming assistance. AI doesn't experience "in the moment" nudges sideways (symantic cues?).

The movie Rise of the Machines comes to mind. Think of the robotic factory machines following imputted instructions. Each machine will NEVER be able to think…why am I doing this? It will continue placing parts on cars or motherboards forever until we turn them off. AI is ARTIFICIAL and that will never change. It’s not real. Human creativity and innovation created the thing.

That applies to currently publicly available models. The progress is exponential. We should revisit this annually.

I always wonder, what if being an outlier is a collective human branding?? not that you're good therefore you're an outlier, but you're an outlier therefore you're either good or bad.. like we are the ones who eventually get to brand you as different and unique and therefore creative, .. you as the creative person doesn't see yourself as any different than any other person.. maybe you see things differently.. maybe your brain gets things faster or slower and more precise or in huge blimps.. I think everything has a ceiling..
