If you want to hear my full interview with David Edmonds of Philosophy Bites and read my write-up, the link is in my bio and it will be out on Friday. Here is the transcript: Imagine you're on a walk in a wood, and you drop a glass on a rock. Glass goes everywhere, but it's a deep wood, and you think nobody will be there for a long time. And so you decide to leave it. But in a few weeks' time, a group of children are playing in that area, and one child steps on the glass and hurts their foot badly. They need stitches, and they are in a lot of pain. I think most people would agree that what you've done is bad, not least because you have harmed somebody else. Now imagine in another scenario that that glass lies there untouched for 50 or 100 years, but then in 2125, another child of the future steps on that glass. They hurt their foot equally and are in a lot of pain. Is the dropping of the glass equally as bad because it hurt somebody in the future as opposed to somebody now? This is one of the many things I spoke to David Edmonds about in this week's Mini #Philosophy interview on thought experiments. The experiment comes from Derek Parfit, and Parfit argues that just because somebody is not born yet doesn't mean that their harm is unimportant. For Parfit and his long-termism, when we weigh up the #good and bad of any actions, we should consider the people of the #future as much as the people of today. This has huge implications for technological development, intergenerational wealth, and, of course, how we treat the #environment . For Parfit, the world that we create today is just as important as the world we pass on to future generations. So, what do you think about Parfit's thought experiment? Do you think that the people of tomorrow matter just as much as the people of today? #ethics #moral
