I’ve had a lot of difficult, eye opening conversations with people I love in the last two weeks. There is a lot going on in my personal life, which I’m not ready to share, but I do want to share some of the reframes that have come from those discussions that have stuck with me, and helped. My brother said something to me that didn’t fit in the context of this carousel, but is fitting: “Your mental health is like a lawn: it requires maintenance to stay alive. I know this is simplistic and I don’t mean to minimize your feelings, but I think it’s time to mow the lawn.” He was right—I saw the grass get long and blades go dry. I saw weeds start to sprout and brush thicken. And I thought to myself, “it’s fine, it will work itself out,” until it was so close to beyond repair that I didn’t know where to start. Do I pull weeds or cut down the brush first? Water the grass or try to mow? How can I bring this back to life when there is so much to do, and every part is impacting the other? So I ask “what’s hurting my lawn the most? the fastest? what—is not the root—but killing the lawn the most?” And start there.
