@dralexsundermann: In 2012, a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak swept across the U.S., killing 64 people and sickening over 700. It started with contaminated steroid injections from a compounding pharmacy and it spread fast. Public health departments and CDC epidemic intelligence officers stopped it from becoming far worse. Now, those very teams are being attacked. h/t to @Dr. Jess (PhD, RDN) for the article on Russell Vought in her recent video and to Dr Demetre for the quote from CNN. #publichealth #cdc #outbreak #health #medicine
I work in sterile compounding and I’m so frustrated at the destruction of public safety and oversight.

Does that mean the vials that were used on those patients had visible mold and not a single healthcare provider decided not to use it? 😭 Or was it not visible to them yet?

This was the worst. I had the injections in Tennessee at a facility listed as recipient. I did not contract fungal meningitis, but I remember having to take and document my temperature for a month or more to make sure I didn’t develop symptoms. Most of the symptoms were things like pain and ache especially lower back, which was why I got the injections so we didn’t know how else to monitor it.

If this happens again, do we even have the people In place to connect everything and figure out the cause of it all? If another pandemic hits, we are in so much trouble.

It’s frightening. I take my job (sterile compounding) very seriously. This story was told to me when I worked at a home infusion. So sad

I live near that facility and work in healthcare, though in an allied health clinic whose scope doesn’t involve things like this (PT), and I do realize it was not the point of your video. But I have always wondered - if you could see the mold in the vials, why were they still used? Couldn’t the nurses/PAs/MDs see that and say “something isn’t right with this…It’s not supposed to have anything floating in there”?

this scared me so bad I've been avoiding epidural steroid injections ever since. 13 years being recommended to get them for my back pain but I've been doing everything I can to avoid 😭. it's not rational but is stuck in my brain

The American people need to wake up! This administration does not care about the people. Their bottom line is the $$$$$ they can put in their pocket, and CONTROL of people that do not meet their standards.

We live in TN and my husband almost died from spinal meningitis in November 2012… they said it was because he was antibiotic resistant because it started as an ear infection
