it’s so funny because caracaras NEVER groom vultures in return. apparently there’s a common head movement that caracaras do that in vulture-speak means: “please preen me!” the vulture preens the caracara, and the caracara (though likely a little confused) is just sorta like “oh, okay. cool. yeah this is fine, sure.”

black vultures are EXTREMELY social so it doesn’t shock me that they’re out here befriending other species (or trying to)

Apparently these pairs are one of the only occurrences that we know of for interspecific allopreening (birds preening other bird species) as well, so that’s cool :)

Vultures don’t need as much help preening because because they have bald heads to keep clean from the carcasses they eat 🥰 the head and back of neck is the one place birds can’t preen themselves

Caracaras are so smart too, I used to volunteer at a rehab as a kid and I’d clean the aviary’s and do shows with some of the animals to rake in the $$ but the caracara would always mess with me as soon as I turn he’d pull me hair just enough to get me to turn and watch him 💀

making vultures evil makes me sad because what they do is quite helpful for the environment. By eating carcasses, they reduce the bacteria decomposition it leaves behind and technically makes the environment cleaner

vultures are an absolute blessing! i hope people can start treating them kinder because they are such a huge and important part of so many ecosystems, there have already been devastating results from the deline in their population in some areas. we need to protect these wonderful birds!

awe. My neighbor across the street has a family of caracaras and a family of vultures living on her property. It's been fun watching them. I haven't seen them interacting with each other, but I'm going to be watching for it now.

It's so cute and interesting! Especially when vultures groom their heads, like sweetie you dont even have head feathers but they're naturals at it 🥰

Cross-species allo-grooming and affiliative behaviours are so sweet and fascinating to witness! So cute to see how vultures take their "natures janitor" role to include cleaning the feathers of other bird species!❤️🥹
