the man was agoraphobic, he was truly and deeply terrified of everything to he point he couldnt possibly bring himself to understand anything other than himself much to everyones detriment 💀 to the point he was married but moved back into his decrepit family home that was falling apart because it was what he knew. everyone caught flak from him buuuut in the cosmic sense he was a genius unfortunately, really nailed the "dont show the monster" vibe

not to come to Lovecraft's defense, but I'm not sure he even liked other white people. he has a whole story bashing Italians for being catholic (i know the Lovecrafts of the 1910s didn't think Italians were white but that's semantics)

It's also very funny how proud he was to be of purely Germanic descent. His world fell apart when he found out that his grandmother was actually Welsh, meaning Celtic. Shortly after this, he wrote "Shadow over Innsmouth".

Frankly I would also like to know what specific beef this man had with fish. Because, like.... there HAS to be a story there

The cognitive distance of praising the man for his depiction of these characters, which is an expression of his xenophobia, and then decrying him for his xenophobia, is fascinating. Phobias are mental health disorders, which I thought were the kind of thing we weren’t supposed to hate people for having.

I feel like the best kind of adaptation of Lovecraft is where the buildup is bonechilling and the reveal of the creature makes you go "really? thats what we were all afraid of?" meanwhile the protagonist is having an existential crisis after coming face to face with a slightly disfigured human man.

Wow this conversation sucked me in! I knew about Lovecraft’s bigotry but hadn’t connected his horror to it.

The most I have ever understood lovecraftian horror was about the king in yellow. inspires artists, but then the artist goes mad never able to put their Vision into reality.
I'm from New England. my ocean is a gray green monster that is gritty and cold. the first time I was on a cruise and looked down at the ocean and saw blues I could scarcely describe, and had never before associated with the sea.. it was madness

"Anxious hatred" describes Lovecraft so well. His bigotry was excessive even for his time, but given that we know a lot of his life and thoughts based on his work, we know he had an intense fear and anxiety that literally made him ill many times (though obviously there were many other factors as well).

I wrote a paper before summer on Lovecraft’s real life inspirations and his incorporation of science. I’m def gonna watch this pod but just to add: all of lovecrafts work deals with human insignificance too, it’s heavily inspired by our inability to comprehend large aspects of the world and a direct response to religions where humans are sort of “chosen” species. He was the first to incorporate it so thoroughly
