Eureka is a sundown town and has done this multiple times. There used to be a chinatown in Eureka, its now gone. The people still look at you funny if youre brown walking around. California is not all sunshine and rainbows, theres more blood here soaking the ground than people realize.

Quick fact: Legendary American writer Bret Harte was living in Arcata when the event happened. He wrote a scathing condemnation of the atrocity for the local newspaper, for which he received death threats and was angrily run out of town for.

I’m born and raised in Eureka. We grew up learning the full truth about this massacre. So much wrong has happened in Humboldt County, but there is a massive effort to return the land and center the Indigenous Peoples. In Eureka High school we could elect to take another local Indiginous language, Yurok. I’ve never heard of another public high school offering that. Native people will have land back!

The Native Americans in that area lived in Wooden Plankhouses not teepees by the way, as in those images. Most native Americans in what is now the Us pre colonization did not live in tepees at all
