In Italy, when you change the engine, the other one has to have the same code (the same type of engine), unless you want to have lots of bureaucratic problems. Even the wheels that you put are highly regulated (only certain codes are permitted).

I had exact same issue, had a mechanic replace a wrangler engine. After customer drove for a bit, check engine light came on. Took 2-3 weeks for the customer to get back in. Realized the knock sensor was no good on the used engine. The company we purchased the engine from stated that they only sold us the motor and that’s it. Insurance wouldn’t pay for a new knock sensor, Even worse, lkq engine had a core charge so it was returned.

When you receive a junkyard engine you typically have to swap everything off of old engine to said junkyard engine. Anyone with enough experience knows this.
