The problem in this situation is... I've only seen yt women claim it's racist and they include her using the word "savage" in the justification for calling it racist... but immediately associating savage with black people or any POC is inherently racist. So listening to the marginalized on both sides isn't enough, you have to look at lyrical context, personality context and past behavior. Which in this instance simply doesn't support the stance.

Yes. Also, Taylor having Kendrick on a track, Haley as a friend, and diverse back up singers and dancers doesn’t make her incapable of being racist. I wish people would stop saying this.

As a poc swiftie I can see how people would appear that way bc it’s a supposed to be a quote that someone said to her but she never put quotes around the lyrics.

Nah, sometimes we just need to look at the facts, and there is not one fact suggesting Taylor is racist. This is not about how someone feels. Sorry, it’s not. Someone will always find something racist. This discourse is actually super harmful and the only people who benefit are people on the right.

I’m genuinely asking then, what is the solution to this? The song was not intended to be racist, and some people were offended by the lyrics. These people have the right feel triggered, and offended, but what is the solution? Should Taylor apologize?

Do you all realize what these arguments and accusations do to us mixed kids? I’m 56 and had enough identity issues because of this stuff. Having cohesive friendships is hard too. Being a member of both groups is crazy making.

What about the necklace? I’ve been a diehard Swiftie since her very first album came out and I’m unsure what to think about the necklace…I personally don’t think it looks problematic but I’ve seen so many people point it out. I’m just not sure about how to feel 😔

I want to love this album, but I can see how it can be taken as racist. I may be in my own villain arc and actually like the album but now that I see it, I can’t unsee it and it ruins the whole thing for me. I’m kinda using this as a red flag. The signs are there, but I’m giving TS the benefit of the doubt based on her past actions.

Yes! I had this conversation with one of my mutuals who is a black woman and used to like TS but didn’t care for this album bc she found it problematic. I so appreciate her taking the time to educate me. Just because I or other women of color didn’t see it doesn’t mean her perception is invalid.

I think swifties are having a hard time with this because she's gotten hate for every reason under the sun for decades, often without valid reason. the default reaction is to be combative ESPECIALLY when it's as serious an accusation as rac1sm. they also LOVE her so being told you're problematic for listening is like telling someone they're canceled if they ever decorate for Christmas or sing in their car.

As a yt person I don’t think it’s my place to speak on it at all. I just wonder about the lack of stitches with one black creator who disagrees having a dialogue with a black creator who agrees and vice versa. Would I be able to see/understand more. Because so far all I’ve seen on the positive end is simply “no, it’s not racist.” No added educational information for me to learn more from, so all i have atm is the negative.

Thank you. I know not to engage with the Black creators who I disagree with, and instead see what I can learn. But I was still struggling with what's "right". And what I have landed upon is that I am not a bad ally if (largely because of my familiarity with Swift's discography) I truly do not believe that the lyrics in question are a dog whistle or that Taylor Swift is a white supremacist.

The issue is also not many listening that she uses that comparison for her own past life first? Opinions are subjective but straight up calling someone racist, especially when not everyone is aware about his past. She always made darkness/daylight comparisons for years in music and now she shouldn't do it anymore?

I just have to applaud your patience on this entire subject. I follow you specifically because I like to follow thoughtful people who are able to not only educate in relatable ways, but also have the emotional intelligence to see the subtext of a stranger’s opinion, even if it differs from your own. Anyway, as a self proclaimed TS hater, I hope you’re enjoying your time with this new media. There are so many emotions, mostly from us white women. But I hope you have a chance to just BE with something you find enjoyable. 🩷

Thank you for this. I’ve taken away from this discourse how important it is we start early teaching children that contrasting light vs dark can be rooted in racism. IT ISNT ALWAYS but SO much of media is dark=bad and we have to be more creative. I don’t think Taylor was racist when she wrote onyx night, but I think her education made that comparison normal and expected. So as a mother, I’m starting there.

Unfortunately, those who are racist are not taught critical thinking, they’re taught blind faith so this will never reach them in any impactful way.

I’ve been privileged to hear both sides of this now and I really love your take: respecting the viewpoint of the person that gives their opinion. Where I have trouble is when people, any people are saying that the artist is racist and thats painted with such a broad stroke, particularly when there seems to be evidence that they aren’t.

I have been sitting with this a lot this week. And I’ve decided that she may not be intending to say that but it is pathetic that she doesn’t care. And she isn’t Antiracist. Thank you for sharing your pov 🥰
