Nothing we know about Garp says he is a loyal marine. He has only ever gone after luffy and never once stoped him even if we know he could have at any point. The only thing we hold Garp to is not saving Ace. I don’t count that as knowing who somebody is.

Disagree. Garp’s not blind to the World Government’s corruption; he just believes in the ideal of justice and the people wearing the uniform, not the institution itself. Likewise Garp doesn’t lack the Monkey D will of freedom. He just channels it differently. Luffy seeks freedom through piracy, Dragon through revolution, and Garp through defying the system from inside the Marines. He believes in what the Marines should be, not what the World Government turned them into. That’s why he mentors Koby, supports SWORD, and wanted Luffy and Ace to live freely. He’s fighting his own war for freedom, just in his own way.

I know one piece isn’t political (😒) but if you really think about it, Garp is an American Democrat. He is only “good” relative to people like akainu. Garp is a democrat and dragon is an actual leftist.

Luffy might be leading a successful revilution, but it is a silent one. Alabasta, Drum Island, Dressrosa, and Water 7 all still fall in line to the world government while secretly being alligned to the Straw Hats. No one knows about Skypiea. and Fishman Island and Wano aren't affiliated with the World Government.

I think that mindset comes from how hes portrayed in the manga, even after all the revelations about the WG oda still portrays him in a positive light, just look at the scene where he sacrificed himself for koby and co.

the only way i think garp can be semi recovered is if sword is a long term running like…. infiltration type army. like with the plan to overthrow and rebel. but garp let Ace die, and that will in of itself always be too much. even if he has a long term plan in the background not sacrificing everything for your grandson was not something i can ever forgive him for.
