@emsavenger: This is a repost, but it's a good reminder that Paramedic school is meant to provide a Paramedic student with the minimum knowledge base to be able to pass their state exam or the Registry exam, and enter the field. It is NOT intended to battle-test students, as not all students go to Paramedic school with the purpose of serving in a rank structure field environment, and not all field positions even function like that. #EMS #EMTs #Paramedics #firstresponders
I can agree with you, however just because they pay for it doesn’t mean they deserve to pass. Accreditation controls numbers and not to just pass. One thing about being an educator is actually knowing something that is factual before you put it out there.

I generally agree but there are some students who need pushed harder to maintain their edge. Definitely not bootcamp but I do want to push students to achieve to their ability.

It’s insane how bad many of these programs are. No other branch of healthcare education treats students like this.

I agree it’s not boot camp. I’m also skeptical of the existence of a student who is a “top performer” yet is getting singled out. While the plural of anecdote is never data; I’ve, personally, never seen one of these students.

What do you think of the programs that “drop” students after failing a test? Not my program but one that I am familiar with.

That was my class mentality in 1994. We had to get the dean involved it was that bad.

I was treated this exact same way. I had an instructor that did everything possible to try and get me removed. In the end, I passed and she was removed as an instructor.

My program used a bastardized version of stress inoculation , and told us several times they were doing things intentionally to stress us out/ mess with our minds/ break us down. They would get pissed if anyone reported anything to the college because “the higher ups dont understand” and encouraged us to “keep things at a troop level”. Two guys definitely developed a bad drinking problem over the 2 years , one person had a heart attack, some old students had to go in pt for SI issues , we all are pretty messed up just from school.

I feel that ALL paramedic programs, school, should have all the Instructors, TA, assistant or anyone involved with training and education, to become teachers and get the certification of Teacher.

while there is something to be said about learning how to do things via firefighters screaming at you, thats how i learned how to drive the ambo and put the monitor cords away lmao. That has no place in actual education, not one proven learning style has trial by fire, shaming, or yelling involved in it

School I went to had instructors who were known perverts…. Female students were literally warned by everyone we went on clinicals with.

My paramedic program was instructed by paramedics from my service. going through school with them caused me to leave that service and go somewhere else. They said it's supposed to "fix" the issues you have as an emt

I wouldn’t call it boot camp or treat it as such, but I’ve got nothing against helping build some resiliency. Same goes for the toxic rookie treatment I’ve witnessed.

Think this comes from the crowd it attracts. Specifically in the fire aspect, the people attracted are the masculine, hard bro types. Being a military guy, I never really got it. We’re public servants, we’re not going to war. Yes a fire is dangerous work, and I believe there is a place for phasing out the weak (polictical correct term being “not qualified”) people. That shouldn’t be during the education period. I wonder if the organization/ area he/ she works for is a combined EMS/ fire dept.

Yeah the design of the program should be to push you mentally when it comes to handling stress. But it isn't boot camp. Being tired from clinicals, thinking under stress in scenarios, and growing in resilience all must be part of it. Going to the OR, ICU and introducing myself cold turkey for clinicals was so valuable in my growth in handing stress and unnatural situations.
