It may sometimes seem like effort but boy is it worth it… using masks when colour grading can be one of the most unnoticed but important tools in the book. When filming I usually expose for the point I want people to focus on but this might then overexpose another area such as the sky which I will then need to bring down in the grading stage. For example, the shot through the window of the castle… if I exposed for the mountains through the window, the foreground of myself and the castle walls would be way too dark and very noisy when it comes to editing the footage, so I exposed for an inbetween in order to not loose the detail of either and used masking to fix it. Another shot however of the man tending to his garden, I needed to expose for the landscape but it meant he was underexposed. I therefore masked his area and brought up the highlights and details so he wouldn’t be lost! Exposing whilst out filming is always tricky! I usually try to keep my camera @sony.unitedkingdom A7Siii meter between +1.7 and +2 before it starts flashing! That my go to rule! but sometimes you can’t get everything in the footage exact which is where masking comes in so handy! I do this on @Adobe but it’s used across all editing platforms. This is a very simple example of masking in the colour grading stage, you can go deep into masking and there are professionals who are amazing at what they do!
