Autism
• Research shows autistic people are around 3–9 times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts or attempts compared to non-autistic people.
• One large study found that around 50% of autistic adults reported having suicidal thoughts at some point, and about 1 in 6 had attempted suicide.
• This risk tends to be higher for late-diagnosed autistic adults, women, and those with co-occurring mental health issues like anxiety or depression.
• Key contributors include chronic social rejection, masking, burnout, feeling misunderstood, and lack of proper support.
⚡ ADHD
• People with ADHD also have an increased risk — studies show they’re about 3–5 times more likely to attempt suicide compared to people without ADHD.
• The risk often comes from impulsivity, rejection sensitivity, low self-esteem, and feeling like they’re always failing despite trying hard.
• It’s even higher when ADHD coexists with autism, depression, or anxiety, which is really common.
