Junko wears a tengu mask and according to it's story, a tengu punishes those who don't follow tradition. Junko was there to punish Hinako if she doesn't become a traditional bride😭

honestly if ur gonna come to my comments and act like people finding a small detail that relates to the characters story arc as "you didnt play properly" or "why do you relate to this" just completely takes away the whole point of the game lmao, these details exist on PURPOSE. besides this arranged marriages DO still happen and to brush it aside with words like "she could say no" or questioning how people feel empathetic or even feel like they can relate to this feeling as just ignorant and taking the entire game at face value, which.. sad for you ig!! if you cannot take horror in form of women being of their autonomy WHICH STILL HAPPENS then ig u just want to be ignorant

Feels like I am the only person here who actually played the game and completed all the endings. The true ending specifically states that what Hinako sees here do not represent reality, she has a warped perception about marriage and men due to her mother and father. At the very end she can just decline the arranged marriage without any repercussions - she heavily overreacts during the game because of her personal trauma.

all the rituals represent hinako losing a part of herself. her name, her thoughts and opinions, her body, everything belongs to or must align with her husband now and she's stripped of her own individuality and will live solely for her husband. like her compliant and overbearing mother.

It represents the women have a bit or all of their identity stolen where the men are fully themselves.

also all thr women have full masks, while men half masks and Hinako gets the male mask, but it's fused with her which is interesting and shows her conflict about gender (or more just the gender roled forced onto her)

The masks represent their family line. That's why junko's was a eagle - she married into an 'eagle' family, and Hinako was going to marry into a 'fox' family. The men didnt have to change who they are or their life path for marriage, so they didnt have to go through pain with their masks. The women, however, needed to go through the pains of losing their independence and a lot of their identity in order to don the mask.

Another thing I saw how Junko's mask isn't like the other women but she also looks as dead as they do imo the mask being normal is because she accepted her role as a wife most likely from being the eldest daughter and the pressure from her parents compared to Hinako who is fighting against it
