@localstoryexch: UK farmers are building on British soil to ensure productivity and food security for the nation 🌱 At Martin Lines' farm in Cambridgeshire, investing time in soil health has become a financial investment for his business. By using regenerative farming techniques, Martin's found his farm has been more resilient to the extremes of wet weather and drought that have been hitting the country each summer. Techniques include planting herbal leys - temporary grasslands which provide food for pollinating insects, improve soil fertility and help the ground to absorb water - and cover crops, which are often grown in winter to protect the soil from wind and water and to suppress weeds. Martin's also building drainage networks to prevent local homes from flooding and looking at new crops he can plant at different times of year to provide a more consistent harvest. The farmer and CEO of the @NatureFriendlyFarmingNetwork has a goal to make his business profitable, resilient and useful to the community around him 💚
