@mohuyaakhan: South Asians are called "smelly" until Western luxury brands base the entire quiet luxury and old money aesthetics on fabrics like madras checks 🧵🪡 Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and others built their empire off a pattern born in South India and woven by South Asian artisans long before it hit American prep runways. Our fabrics are powerful symbols in South Asian culture, used in ceremonial functions, a means to people's livelihoods, and we all deserve to know the real history behind "trendy" clothing in the West. let me know your thoughts on this! 💌 #oldmoneyaesthetic #southasianfashion #preppyaesthetic #browntok #fashionhistory
you’re telling me we’ve got south asia to thank for these bangers?

tbh i was never bothered when ppl were refer to indian things as south asian but ive noticed now when it’s something bad ppl immediately say indian but if it’s something good they say “south asian” weird. I’d like us to start specifically saying indian more rather than south asian.

It’s Tamil, which is Indian, not south Asian. Give India credit for what it created, this madras fabric has nothing to do with non Tamil cultures.

Hi! Fellow South Asian here and studies fashion. The plaid you see in European fashion specifically western/northern Europe came from Tartan patterns that originated about 3000 years ago. It’s an ancient pattern used by vikings, ancient celts and the Scottish and can be traced back to China. That’s where brands such as Ralph Lauren and Pendleton got that influence from and continued that tradition.

ughhh idk :
I always thought the checked pattern was english taking the meaning out of tartan and rebranding it as private school universals and it spread to fashion.
