The really good practitioners (I’ve had one!) will say “I’m going to touch your inner thigh, okay now I’m going to touch the outside of you. Okay now I’m going to insert the speculum, let me know if it’s too uncomfortable.” They narrate the whole process, and psychologically warm you up to receiving touch. But those practitioners are so rare!

Don't listen to the people who says it's just a little uncomfortable. Does "it feels like they're ripping my insides apart with a cheese grater" sound a "little uncomfortable" to you??? Well that's how it feels for me. For some women, this hurts ridiculously badly.

My GYN is a woman. She warms the instruments, her hands, and offers socks! The appointments aren't fun, but her care makes it less terrible.
