It was a quiet July afternoon in Cypress, Texas. The kind of day where the sun sat heavy in the sky and the world felt still. But inside one suburban home, that stillness was about to be shattered forever. This is the story of the Stay family.A story of love, survival, and unimaginable loss. 💔 A Past They Tried to Escape Katie and Stephen Stay once lived in Utah with their children. Behind their smiles was a history of control and fear. Katie’s sister, Melannie, had once been married to a man named Ronald Lee Haskell. He was charming in public but cruel behind closed doors. When Melannie finally found the courage to leave, she fled to Texas with her children and found comfort living near her sister Katie. But Haskell could not accept being left behind. His anger grew until it became something dark and deadly. 🚨 The Day Evil Came Knocking July 9, 2014. Haskell arrived at 711 Leaflet Lane, disguised as a FedEx worker. The home sat in the quiet Enchanted Oaks subdivision outside of Spring, Texas. When fifteen year old Cassidy Stay answered the door, she did not recognize him. He asked for her parents. She told him they were not home. He left. But moments later, he came back. He told her he was her ex-uncle. When she tried to close the door, he forced his way inside. He tied her up and made her lie face down. When Stephen and Katie returned home with their four other children, Haskell bound them all. He demanded to know where Melannie was. When the family refused to tell him, he snapped. He lined them up and shot each of them in the back of the head, execution style. 💔 A Family’s Final Moments Inside that home were Stephen and Katie Stay and their children: Cassidy, 15 Bryan, 13 Emily, 9 Rebecca, 7 and little Zach, only 4. Haskell fired thirteen shots. Five died at the scene. One child passed away at the hospital. Only Cassidy survived. 👁️ The Girl Who Played Dead Cassidy had been shot through the head and hand. The bullet fractured her skull and tore the tip of her finger. Still, she stayed conscious. She pretended to be dead until Haskell drove away in the family’s car. Then, bleeding and weak, she crawled to the phone and called 911. With a whisper, she said, “He’s coming for my grandparents.” Her bravery saved their lives. 🚔 The Chase and Arrest Police used Cassidy’s information to track Haskell. A twenty minute chase followed. Two dozen patrol cars surrounded him near a cul-de-sac about three miles from the murder scene. For three tense hours, Haskell held a gun to his head while speaking to police on his cellphone. Nearby homes were evacuated. Finally, he surrendered. Inside his car, they found his gun and a written plan describing his next targets. ⚖️ Justice and the Girl Who Lived In court, Haskell showed no remorse. In 2019, he was sentenced to death. Cassidy, the sole survivor, continues to honor the memory of her family. At a memorial, she stood before hundreds and said softly, “Stay strong, and love one another.” The Stay family murders remind us that evil can wear a familiar face. But Cassidy’s courage reminds us that even in darkness, love can survive. She lived not just to tell what happened, but to carry the voices of those who could not.
