![Zohran Mamdani, born in 1991, is New York City’s first socialist–democratic mayor. But few people know that before becoming one of the most radical figures in American politics, Mamdani went by the name Mr. Cardamom and dreamed of a future in music. Under that alias, he released “Nani”, a song dedicated to his grandmother, which has recently gone viral again thanks to his political rise. His passion for hip-hop, however, began in childhood. Before adopting his current stage name, Mamdani was known as Young Cardamom (later changing it to “Mr.” because it sounded too childish) and released the EP Sidda Mukyaalo (“no going back to the village”) with Ugandan rapper HAB. The project mixed English, Luganda, and Afro-Indian sounds to challenge stereotypes about their identities.
