@functionwithalana: I recently heard about a teacher strike here in Canada — not near us, but when I learned what they were striking for, it made me stop. Smaller class sizes. More resource teachers. And I thought… of course they should have that. Why don’t they? As we prepare to enter the world of elementary school next year, I’ve felt a growing sense of concern. We know so many teachers who are kind, creative, and truly care about our kids — and as a parent, that’s everything you could hope for. But our classrooms are too big. Teachers are under-resourced. And I can’t help but wonder why we all seem to just accept that. Private school isn’t accessible for everyone, but why can’t there be more public options that go beyond this outdated model — where teachers are supported and kids can actually thrive? This is new territory for us, but we’re not the kind of family that just does what everyone else does “because that’s how it’s done.” Once you wake up and realize you do have a say — in your life, your health, your child’s environment — it’s hard to ignore what’s not working. Maybe the first step is simply asking: How can we support our teachers? Write a letter, start a conversation. Because change shouldn’t only come through strikes that hurt the kids too. We all want the same thing: happy teachers, supported classrooms, and emotionally healthy kids. And maybe the root cause of so many modern issues starts right there... in how we educate, nurture, and invest in the next generation.
