@bee.jeweled.coop: 🛁🐓 A good dust bath is one of the best ways to prevent red mites naturally. It helps chickens keep their feathers clean, their skin healthy, and those pesky mites away. We just had red mites show up in our coop (yep — it happens to the best of us), and I shared a video last week on how to treat an infestation. Now I’m showing you the best way to prevent them from ever getting in your coop in the first place! Some chicken keepers go years — even a lifetime — without ever seeing these mites. Prevention is key, and knowing exactly how to act when those little buggers show up is crucial. Here’s to a mite-free coop and healthy chickens. I hope this helps you on your chicken keeping journey! ✨ #backyardchickens #dustbath #chickencare #chickenkeeping #miteprevention
Haven't the mites spread all over the sand in the chicken coop?

Is a dust bath needed in a sand filled run? Only asking because I have sand in my run and they just dust bathe all over in it…

Apparently mites absolutely hate the scent of lavender so sprinkling lavender in there and in the egg boxes can help as well :)

Do you make your own herbs for your chickens for both the bath and the laying boxes? Or do you have a favorite herb product for concerns specifically that you love??

speaking from my own experience with a very severe infestation, a sand bath alone won’t help against mites. It’s best to burn everything out with a gas torch every other day, especially in the cracks and to use diatomaceous earth.💕

I have 3 hens, they free range my garden and are constantly dust bathing in my flower beds and veggie patch lol! They dust bathe under our conifer trees and down the ditch too. Haven’t had a problem with mites or lice for years!
