There, on a vibrant cushion of green, sat a beetle the size of my thumb, its carapace a breathtaking, iridescent jewel shifting from emerald to sapphire in the filtered light. I had found Gemmaelytra spectabilis, known to the local Kuku Yalanji guides as the "Jewel Bloom Beetle." I leaned in for a closer look, my shadow falling over it. That was the trigger.
