As the comet approaches the Sun, it speeds up due to the Sun's gravitational pull, and will reach a maximum speed of about 68 kilometers per second (\(~152,000\) mph) at its closest approach (perihelion). Its apparent changes in speed are a result of more accurate measurements and normal gravitational forces, not a mysterious deceleration.
