@denice.sb: Sharing stuff I learn during my research lol slightly obsessed with this one This 19th-century theologian saw TikTok coming. Kierkegaard warned that the self would turn into a performance and that we’d trade authenticity for attention. Now nearly 200 years later, i find it an interesting discussion. Was he right or not? This is the first of 3 short videos I have in mind for a little mini series. Call it “when Thinkers predicted the internet” Next: who predicted influencer culture? Then: who predicted parasocial relationships? ——— Watch me ramble lol that’s what happens when you have no friends to talk to 🥀 Kierkegaard, theology, philosophy, belief, cognition, faith, authenticity, identity, reflection, modernity, selfhood, consciousness, attention, digital culture, religion, beauty, transcendence, meaning, thought, humanity, academia, soft academia

You could argue that participating in life and society (not meaning TikTok) is in itself a performance. We have to act a certain way, our performance changes based on where we are or who we’re with. We often worry more about how we are perceived, rather than whether or not we are sharing our true selves with others.

Good view thanks. I think you can go back much further than him though for comparison, especially to the Buddha and Chuang Tzu, both of whom warned of the egotistical grasping for attention and praise, and how that is a constant impulse through life.

He was a philosopher first and foremost, and the most accurate pronunciation of his last name is Kirkegor, Soren Kirkegor, not Kierkegaard.

What I find interesting is that normal people have becoming walking, talking ad spaces to sell in order fund their hobbies or careers here on tiktok or YouTube. The internet has become a digital street we beg on, while the wealthy continue to turn a profit from advertising our personal lives.

The Talmud (Sotah 49b) described our time with eerie accuracy: Insolence rises, prices soar, truth vanishes, the young shame the old, the wise are mocked, and leaders just mirror the crowd, “the face of the generation is like the face of a dog.” It ends: “On whom can we rely? Only on our Father in Heaven.”
