It's not a general rule of thumb I would say to not have a mortgage, sure in Ja u can build slowly until ur done and have zero mortgage, but places like US, Canada, England that's not feasible or allowed. That said, you have to pay to live somewhere. Sure, a house is expensive to own, but in the end, it's still somewhere you have equity in. If you rent for all your life, rental cost will follow inflation and cost of living, but a mortgage gets less expensive over time if u dont stretch it out further. In the end, all the monies you've paid for rent over time built equity for someone else.
That said, though, I am interested in what these people retiring see as better options🤔
