In July 2023, the Office of Management and Budget published OMB Bulletin No. 23-01, which revised the delineations of metropolitan, micropolitan, and combined statistical areas across the country. As part of those revisions, the Kinston micropolitan area was removed from Greenville’s CSA, leaving only Greenville (Pitt County) and Washington (Beaufort County) in the combined area. The official Greenville–Washington CSA now comprises only those two counties. 📉 How this change can hurt Greenville’s growth prospects Because statistical area designations are used in many federal, state, and private sector analyses, losing Kinston from the CSA has real consequences: • Smaller “official” footprint: With fewer counties included, Greenville’s CSA becomes a smaller statistical region.
